Lord Jesus is coming!!! Hello, what is your name, Martha or Mary?!!!

Jesus came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home for Him. Her sister Mary sat at Lord’s feet listening to Jesus. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. Martha came to Him and asked “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha” the Lord answered, “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her”. [Luk 10.38-42]
The story of two sisters and Jesus, reveals many spiritual mysteries in the context of exposing the heart of the worshiper before God. In the human perceptive Martha did nothing wrong and she did something right regarding all the preparations in the house for Christ. But in the God’s perspective Mary did something God pleasing by preparing herself for Christ. Let’s have a serious look at it to encourage ourselves to grow mature in Christ from strength to strength and glory to glory.
1: Martha opened her house for the presence of Christ. But Mary opened her life for the Lordship of Christ.
2: Martha’s character reflected her self-dependence with no repentance. But Mary’s humble character reflected her God dependence and His grace abundance.
3: Martha was totally busy and got distracted by the preparations in the house for Christ and failed in preparing herself for Christ the Bread of life. Martha worried more about preparing the earthly nourishment without giving priority for receiving the Heavenly Nourishment through the awesome Guest from Heaven .
When the Lord God visits our house, with reverence and awe, we should first bow down like Abraham worshiping God in his house near the oaks of Mamre [Gen 18.1]. Once Jesus said [Mathew 6.25-26] “Do not worry about what you will eat or drink! Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
But Mary chose the one thing which made her worthy of Christ and no concerns for external preparations disengaged her heart and separated her from Christ. Mary presented her body for the renewal of mind before Christ to please God through consuming the Spiritual Nourishment from the Word of God.
In quietness and peace Mary declared, “My God is not the stomach”. Because, “It is written, `MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’ [Mathew 4.3-4]
4: Martha communicated her frustration through her rebellious words and actions, but Mary communicated her satisfaction through silence and inaction.
Martha presented her own point views before the Lord of the Heaven and the earth. But Mary denied her own point of views and conceived the point of views from the Heaven on earth.
Once in the Mount of transfiguration, Peter thought of building huts for Christ, Moses and Elijah, but Heaven said, “Listen to Christ”.
5: Martha got rooted in the fault finding spirit and became a prisoner of bitterness. She interrupts the ministry of Christ by exposing her disagreement, anger and anguish instead of reverence and awe to the Lord who came to bless her. We should understand one thing always and remain thankful, God is never our problem, He is the provider and the Father of all comforts.
But Mary got deeply rooted in Christ and was liberated by the Ultimate Liberator; and she stood still without speaking a single word to confront her sister, knowing the Lord God is her Defender.
6: Martha’s self righteous instincts made her question and angrily instruct Christ, what to speak and how to make her sister a slave to her ideology.
A wrong belief system will suppresses the truth and distort the definition of serving God and pleasing Him. If we don’t seek God and renew our mind according to the perfect will of God and focus in doing it, we will manipulate other people’s freedom to make them do our personal  agendas to gratify the desires of our flesh. Here we may be deceived by our own selfish motives which contradict the desires of the Holy Spirit!
Remember, Devil once tried to instruct our Lord Jesus, he said “Command to the stones”, and it was only to see the fulfillment of the wicked desires of the Evil one. “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones to become bread” [Mathew 4.3]. Devil is presenting an illegitimate solution for a legitimate need at a time when Jesus is hungry after 40 days of fasting.  Devil tried to take control of the will of Christ and failed completely.
But Mary’s self-denial and total focus on God’s will brought her under the yoke of the Lord Jesus and set her free from the yoke of all distractions and unrighteous controls. For the full freedom to do His perfect will, the Lord enabled Mary to pick her own choice between what is man pleasing and what is God pleasing and good!
7: Martha was filled with a spirit of control, but Mary was filled with self control. Martha projected her authority as the boss who controls the house before the Guest of Honor.
But Mary humbled herself and accepted the Guest of Honor as her Boss forever. She possessed self control and gentleness of Christ as the fruit of the Spirit to overcome the pressure of her dear sister Martha who lost the control over her!!!  Martha was discontented and got emotionally separated from Christ the giver of joy. But Mary was glad and contented; she found the fullness of joy in the presence of Christ . Mary perhaps made music in her heart by singing, “This is the day that the Lord has made, I ‘ll rejoice and be glad in it.”
At all circumstances we should remember Christ alone is the Lord and we are not. We are called to preach the Word and to speak the Truth in love, we have no authority to control a grown up person’s mind.
8: Martha focused on what pleases herself and Mary focused on what pleases God. Martha’s actions driven by the self will to serve the Lord was found unworthy. But Mary’s obedience to God’s perfect will to stick with Christ was found praiseworthy.
9: Martha found the earthly solutions built on the foundations of sand and it came crumbling down with no favor of God; But Mary found Heavenly solutions built on the Unshakable Rock who has the keys for every single problem.
10: Martha took herself very seriously than Christ and ignored the mind of the Spirit. She followed the mind of the flesh than seeking what pleases God the most.
But Mary took her fellowship with Christ very seriously, than her fellowship with her hard working and busy sister Martha.
11: Martha ignored the glorious Ministry of the Lord Jesus who preached in her house, as if she had to do something more important than that.
But Mary  sat at the Lord’s feet and received something which is most important for her whole life and eternity. Mary closed her heart for everything that distracts her from the communion with the Lord. Her heart did not confirm with the ways of the world and she gets transformed by what the Lord speaks.
12: Martha made the choices which were based on her good works for God. But Mary made one choice based on the awesome grace of Christ and stole the heart of the Lord, which no one can steal from her now.
In Song of Solomon 4.9, The King says “You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride; you have stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace.” In the innermost being of Mary, Christ became the shining Jewel on her sparkling necklace, which is made out of the precious pearls and diamonds of wisdom from God.
13: What Martha found as a ministry to establish her ideology lost all its glory, because there is no ministry without the Lord’s company, we cannot do anything without Christ.
That’s why Apostles chose those who are filled with the fullness of the Holy Spirit and wisdom to even serve food on the tables of the Church. Without the union with Christ, Martha was lonely, distracted, worried and upset regarding all the preparations in the house. Without Christ all our works lose its value, we are unable to do any good and please God. Apostle Paul said, “For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself” [1Cori 11.23]. We can only distribute His goodness after being with Him.
Perhaps Martha could have done all the preparations before the arrival of Jesus, and could have delegated responsibilities to the right people. Then Martha would have been blessed along with Mary in the presence of God.
But Mary found the communion with Christ as the ultimate thing that brings mutual delight to God and His worshiper, more than getting overly busy in the acts of a ministry driven by human insights.
Hello!!! Lord Jesus is coming again, what is your mode of preparation? Will you be upset or will you be in union with Christ. In this context, my dear friend what’s your name, Martha or Mary?!!! Thank you…VJ TRAVEN
